The Harcourt Street line ran on an embankment / viaduct from this point all the way to Harcourt Street station. This resulted in a number of low bridges for road traffic on the route. Acceptable for the late 1800's but not for the 21st century with double decker buses etc. Therefore when the LRT was being built on the formation of the Harcourt Street line it was decided to cross Beechwood Road at grade instead of a bridge. This has resulted in this very interesting dip being created. Beechwood stop in the distance is built on the site on Ranelagh and Rathmines Station.
